Does your space have a particular feeling/philosophy/attitude? What kinds of activities occur there?

Locust Projects is a non-profit alternative art space that specializes in experimental and/or site-specific artwork. We encourage artists to make creative projects without commercial concern, so our aim is to provide time, space, and, of course, money to be able to do this. This makes our program largely process-orientated. We invite international and national artists to Miami to exhibit with and engage with the Miami community. The show is the result of their time here. Our emphasis is not so much on the result but the facility of the creative process.

What sorts of projects are in store for you?

May 2: Locust Projects “Extreme Makeover Gallery Edition.” Spring Fundraiser.

May 10 – June 28 : Kate Gilmore of New York in a site specific performance.

July/August: Hilger Artist Award winners the TM Sisters at Locust Projects. Locust will be open during this time to allow the public to view the making and progression of the work.

September 12 – October 31: TM Sisters exhibition

What role does your space play in the community it is in?

Miami has a large art market, and Locust, over the past ten years, has provided a much-needed alternative to commercial galleries and museum spaces. We aim to foster critical dialogue and open lines of communication between artists and organizations elsewhere that have similar philosophies.

With unlimited resources, what would you do with the space? What kind of infrastructural support would you want?

Locust is constantly striving to increase our project budget to facilitate more creative ideas and provide a better experience and service to artists. Aside from basic infrastructural and operational budget improvements, my personal goal would be to create a meeting place for artists to exchange ideas, read, screen videos, and gain access to information that worked as a part of but independently of our space.
