The DEMILITARIZED U. @ Northwestern

YOU SAM GOULD ROBERT PRUITT HEATH SCHULTZ and the DEMILITARIZED U. Friday May 22nd; 6–8PM Kresge Hall Rm 3-365, 1880 Campus Drive, Evanston What does it mean to build a creative resistance to the militarization of our culture? SAM GOULD is an American artist the lead instigator of Red 76 , a collaborative art practice based in Portland. Red76 is the moniker for collaboratively based initiatives conceived, most often, by Portland artist Sam, and fleshed out by a group of like minded folks. Red76 has initiated projects, large and small, that have been realized in North America, and Internationally. Red76’s work facilitates discussion, thought and action within public space, as well as examines what that space can be, and where that space may reside at any given time. Projects have been commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, the Drawing Center, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Printed Matter, Creative Time, the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Gallery at Reed College, and many others. ROBERT PRIUTT Is a Chicago based artist and professor at Northwestern University. The writes, " I have been educated by the contemporary art system, but my neighborhood , and most of its residents, are unaware of this world, and that world is unaware of it. This is the dichotomy out of which I work. An inhabitant of two worlds, my work attempts to bridge the gap between African cultural traditions supposedly lost to African Amercans, and contemporary art making tactics. I fuse Hip-hop sensibilities, rewritten histories, and penchant for the found, (or cheaply bought) object. I romanticize the revolutionary ideologies of the seventies, the dope fresh styles of the eighties, and the conceptual art making practices of the nineties. I collect objects, quotes, and events from my stereotypically disenfranchised neighborhood, bring them back to my studio, and mix them up to make art. My materials are artifacts stained with memory and meaning. I use these artifacts to make objects and images that expound on the black condition in America, and I use a chitlin circuit style of humor to sneak it into the subconscious of my audience." HEATH SCHULTZ Is a Chicago based artist exploring the space between radical pedagogical practices and radical art production. He recently completed an essay on these issues and will be discussing some of his conclusions. He is also the founder of Palatial History a project that is dedicated to revisiting and rethinking history. Utilizing various methods of investigation, as well as archiving the research material that is accumulated, Platial History aims to heighten criticality and consciousness of our surroundings, as well as examining how history has been recorded and conveyed.
