Allan Sekula, Polonia and Other Fables @ The Renaissance Society
September 20 – December 13
The Renaissance Society will present an exhibition of new work by photographer Allan Sekula. Representing the next chapter in the artist’s long-term project Fish Story, this new series, titled Polonia and Other Fables, picks up the thread of critically documenting and examining the social impact of global economics. Always aiming to position his work within an exhibition’s local community, Sekula will develop this project to focus on Chicago’s rich labor history, with particular focus on the large Polish immigrant population here, and The University of Chicago’s famous lineage of economic theorists.
Sekula’s work functions as both art and critical inquiry, with his photographic investigations mirroring his intellectual pursuits. A renowned writer and critic as well as an artist, Sekula has completed extensive studies on capitalism, labor history, economics, and the theory and practice of photography. Central to his work is an interest in documentation—as a pictorial form, a method of record, a narrative device, and a medium of social engagement.
