1. Does your space have a particular feeling, philosophy, or attitude? What kinds of things happen there?

LA><ART is the leading independent nonprofit exhibition space in Los Angeles for the production of experimental exhibitions, public art initiatives and emerging artist publications.

2. What factors lead to choosing the space? How did you design it?

LA based architect and board member Peter Zellner designed the interior. The space is raw and neutral. Artists tend to produce aggressive architectural interventions in the space, which functions in way like a studio or a place for experimentation. Risks are taken in the space that oftentimes represent projects that are not feasible in other institutions.

3. What sort of projects are in store for you?

We are currently producing solo exhibitions with LA based artist William Leavitt, an artist from Mexico City, Gustavo Artigas, a collaboration between Arthur Ou and Alice Konitz, a solo exhibition with Mexico City – based artist Artemio, and a solo exhibition with New York painter Kamrooz Aram.

4. What role does your space play in the community?

LA><ART is an accessible space for both artists and audiences. It is modest in scale and creates direct, intimate relationships between our vast and young curatorial team, our audiences and our collaborating artists.

5. With unlimited resources, what would you do with the space? What kind of infrastructural support would you want?

We would want a permanent space that we owned to allow for sustainability and to solidify the future of LA><ART in the city for generations of artists and curators to come.

6. What other places and spaces do you like?

The Kitchen, NY, Estacion, TJ, Participant, NY, Queens Nails Projects, San Francisco…..

7. How did your space start?

LA><ART was founded in 2005 by curator Lauri Firstenberg with the support of an incredible group of advisors including local, national and international artists, curators, directors and patrons.
