FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Reuben Kincaid and The Hills Esthetic Center present an exhibition from the French Print House Le Dernier Cri, with an opening reception on Friday, October 29th from 8-11 PM; the show will close November 20th, 2010. Based in Marseille, France, Le Dernier Cri specialize in extreme, grotesque and scatological subject matter expressed through exquisite printmaking. Often the scenes depicted are manic and perverse; drawings fill the surface of the paper with a very strong sense of horror vacui. Le Dernier Cri is comprised of artists Pakito Bolino and Caroline Sury, whom have been working diligently since the 1990’s on the fringe of the art-print, comics, and publishing worlds. This work stands alone as a more direct and confrontational graphic hand-drawn style in relation to artists like Gary Panter and the former Fort Thunder Collective.
* Please be advised that the images in this work are very graphic and explicit; therefore discretion is advised, especially for children.
The following excerpts are from “The manic multimedia madness of Le Dernier Cri” By Rupert Bottenberg appearing in The Montreal Mirror, 2004.
“Our main aim is to help expose artists from the margins, whether they’re in contemporary art or comics.” Le Dernier Cri is out to destroy the artificial, academic barriers between purported “fine” art, pop art like comix and what’s called l’art brut, or outsider art. That third category is the domain of compulsive schizophrenics and backwoods weirdoes, folks that Le Dernier Cri has a history of integrating into the collective’s assembly of insanity."
“It’s something more visceral, art made by people who aren’t part of normal artistic culture. They’re not aware that they’re doing art. They’re doing it above all for themselves. That’s why the work of certain marginal artists, like the comics of Valium, are rather close to l’art brut, their way of filling up a piece of paper is close to automatic drawing.”
