Does your space have a particular feeling/philosophy/attitude? What kinds of activities occur there?
We aim to provide a space for thought-provoking exhibitions without compromise to the commercial market.
What factors lead to choosing the space you operate out of? What functions did you take in consideration when designing it?
We happened to be in the right place at the right time when we bought our building. There wasn’t much thought put into the space itself. We were happy to have a permanent place to show work. The building was already divided into two halves, and we decided that the best way to make it work was to have the gallery on one side and studios on the other. In doing this, it enabled us to show whatever we wanted in the gallery, and we didn’t have to worry about sales to make our mortgage payment.
What sorts of projects are in store for you?
TeamLump has a show this summer at Cell in London. Hopefully, they’ll return the favor and come over here to do a show with us. Tory Wright, Jerstin Crosby, Cammi Climaco, and Chris Coleman all have projects coming up this spring. We are constantly looking for interesting artists, curators, collectives and other spaces to collaborate with.
What role does your space play in the community it is in?
We look to the art world at large, which has always been at odds with our current geographical location, and respond to that.
With unlimited resources, what would you do with the space? What kind of infrastructural support would you want?
We struggle with the thought of going non-profit. I really think it’s a whole different strategy that we are not interested in at this time. I don’t fantasize about what I could have, but focus on what we do have and work with that. It’s just one of the variables that makes this project interesting.
What are other spaces or places that you like?
We are attracted to spaces that take matters into their own hands. People, places, and projects who value art over commerce. We are inspired by programs like Cell, the Suburban, the Breeder, Canada, White Columns, the Rhizome folks, Vox Populi/Screening, and Momenta, to name a few. Locally, Branch (Durham) and Elsewhere (Greensboro) are doing some interesting things.
