WE AS ARTISTS MUST SEE OURSELVES AS RECEIVERS, conductors and generators of the energy that we call art. There are many parallels between the physics of aesthetics and the world of regular physics. Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about scale. There seems to be an incredible amount of enthusiasm for projects developing alternative economies, education, food, artworlds, and the other infrastructures that organize daily life. But I also want to get bigger, to connect with independent organizers in other places and contexts, to share our problems and concerns, to recognize and revel in our differences, and then to scale up.

One of InCUBATE’s projects provided the opportunity for this discussion, augmentin for ear infection. Founded in 2007, InCUBATE is a research group dedicated to exploring new approaches to arts administration and arts funding, particularly for those doing non-commercial creative work. Sometimes people ask us what ownership we feel over the project as it has spread. Honestly, I have a twinge of jealousy that FEAST can galvanize such a large audience and has such a good design presence and that STEW makes such amazing meals and funds outside the typical art community, augmentin without a prescription. But other than admiring the different ways of making-do, I am less interested in a franchising model and more into letting the seed grow where it may. Yet with this kind of attitude, is there any hope of building a movement, a national conversation, augmentin 875-125 mg, a collective voice to address how our infrastructures for supporting and cultivating creative work are just straight-up failing. Do we need to get our shit together and get organized.

What is our responsibility to keep the thing going, even though it can sometimes feel like another full-time job. I’m not complaining. I think this is a great problem to think through, augmentin 750, especially because it’s not confined to artists. After many conversations, among InCUBATE and with people involved in this Sunday Soup network, we have decided that it’s now time to experiment with how to support ourselves as organizers and the eco-system of art spaces in the place where we live and work. We were looking for a new model that we could appropriate and expand upon. Augmentin without a prescription, InCUBATE had been in research mode for our project, the Artist-run Credit League (ARCL), a rotating credit association for artist-run spaces in Chicago. Basically, it acts as a collective savings account and micro-credit line. We decided to work with Katy Asher of Portland Stock and others there to launch an upgraded version of the ARCL, augmentin without a prescription. Having the soup network enabled us to build off the conversations we were already having with people in Portland, Augmentin gram negative, and therefore establish a sense of trust in our collaboration and a means to try and understand the wants and needs of the people out there. However it will take a group process to get the ARCL fully functional, as it’s built upon social relationships that have to develop over time.

Our new version also takes the form of a giving circle, which will start with twelve artist-run member organizations. Each organization is responsible for a monthly membership fee. Our initial idea is that their responsibilities would include facilitating a group membership for Fractured Atlas, augmentin 625 duo, which is a national fiscal sponsorship agency that provides individual health insurance for artists, allows member-organizations who are not nonprofits to apply for grants, and enables the ARCL itself to be tax-deductible, in case outside funders want to donate to the group at large. For fundraising, the ARCL will partner with a local bar or cafe who will agree to donate part of the proceeds of an ARCLdedicated night once a month. They will also be responsible for promoting that month night at the bar or cafe among their networks, augmentin without a prescription. We are basing this on the popular and brilliant Peace Party, which happens at Danny’s Bar in Bucktown once a month. The Peace Party gives to a different cause each month, and Danny’s gives fifty percent of the bar proceeds that night to the cause. We hope that artist-run spaces, by being mutually invested in the fund itself, will have an interest in attending each other’s fundraisers and building the community of participants outwards. The circle depends on the community investment in its well-being, meaning that it will become a sustainable model based on the group’s level of commitment to making it work. Maybe there are giant holes in this plan, and it will not take off like Sunday Soup did. Or maybe it will. Feel free to take it on and make it better. We need each other more than ever.’’

The dawn of the project was encouraged by a few separate events, namely the separate invitation I received to draft an art curriculum for that school, and the neighborhood’s need for a middle school and a community center, to counter gang options for the youth.

There too was a conversation between artist Michael Piazza and myself, about building projects with community residents based on their questions and needs, not available materials or traditional pedagogies. This was a pursuit to identify the structural necessities to create a Social Settlement – a space that would allow for community residents to join in on all aspects of a creative and utilitarian learning compound built on the specific needs of all involved. It was inspired by the writings of Paulo Friere and John Dewey, the actions of Jane Adams and Myles Horton, and the skills of adults already in the neighborhood, Augmentin 800 mg, all men and women who built their own institutional parameters based a lifetime of work and an understanding that reasonable solutions are found with simple, inclusive measures of community.

Today the Stockyard Institute is a joint pedagogical collective and artist project. The new school venture would need support in many forms and with some consistency. Pre-service teachers from the School of Education at DePaul University, where I taught, provided support at a key moment and were welcomed by the incoming group of volunteer teachers. These were the three parallel efforts, each appreciating the other as a source of momentum and matched support, all taking place in three separate buildings on that small intersection that remains remarkably untouched today.

Quickly we took over a three-story abandoned elementary school around the corner from the school. There were no conditions in the Back of the Yards that made it more susceptible to success other than the invitation to come to the school and design an arts curriculum. I found it important to stay in the neighborhood and see the youth move forward for several years, augmentin online. The students soared because for the first time, these artists, musicians and writers were providing tools and thoughtful guidance through our projects. On many levels, the arts were extremely important and necessary to survival. The first few years also saw some 200 DePaul University education students move through the San Miguel School, to work with the teachers and children and to aid in the design of an urban teaching initiative. However, both models work counter to the fiscal pursuits of those who make specific policy decisions and fiscal recommendations with no regard for the devastating results to residents and the struggle it takes to sustain fragile infrastructures, augmentin online.

On April 17, 2003, the 1244th Transportation Company Army National Guard was deployed to Kuwait, and there he supported combat operations by transporting supplies from camps and ports in Kuwait to camps in Iraq. After three extensions, totaling 15 months, his Company was redeployed back to Illinois.

Hughes returned to the University of Illinois in the spring of 2005 and became a painting major. Photos that he took in Iraq served as the basis for many of his paintings. In 2006, Hughes joined Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), a national membership organization consisting of veterans and active duty service members who have served in the US military since September 11, 2001. Below, Aaron discusses the origins of OFC and its impact on the performers and the public alike.

Nicolas Lampert: Do you know how Operation First Casualty first started and how it developed.

Aaron Hughes: [laughs] Yeah, I know about how it developed. It developed out of the January 27, 2007 march against the war, augmentin for ear infection.

AH: That was in D.C. After the march, there was a day of lobbying, and a couple of us IVAW members attended, and after it we went out for beers at this blues bar called Madam's Organ. We were drinking beers and actually singing karaoke. I remember Garett [Reppenhagen], Geoff [Millard], Augmentin 625 duo, and I had all gotten up and sang “Bohemian Rhapsody.” [pause] “Momma, I just killed a man.” That’s kind of ironic. We got really excited about it and were trying to figure out how to actually perform it. Geoff suggested that we carry pink water guns. NL: You’re in full military uniforms.

There was a moment of fear. Veterans are these young kids – eighteen and nineteen, and we’re patrolling New York. We were forcing the public to make a lot of jumps in its understanding. I guess I don’t know how to tell it.

War is such a destructive force. A part of the healing process, or a part of transforming out of that person who was part of that destructive process is doing things that are creative – culturally producing and finding a way to tell stories that are instructive, instead of destructive.

I know that sounds really simple, but I really think that is a primary reason why people get involved with IVAW, and stay involved.
